Biologist and author Rupert Sheldrake discusses intention as it relates to all living organisms in this discussion with IONS' Senior Scientist Dean Radin. He mentions Aristotle's theory, which he called 'final cause,' as describing goal-directed behavior inherent in nature. But this theory was removed from science in the 17th century and has only recently been explored again. Rupert cites examples and experiments that demonstrate the "principle of goal." An embryo moves toward a specific goal: even when half of it is killed, the other half can create the whole. Rupert's morphogenesis theory implies that intention is not a unique trait of human consciousness, but an essential part of the nature of life in all biological systems.
