Dr. Peter Bancel on the Global Consciousness Project

This was a webinar recorded on November 23, 2013, co-hosted by the Dutch Society for Psychical Research and the Institute of Noetic Sciences.

The hypothesis of the Global Consciousness Project is that there is a collective or global mind that is detectable with physical devices called random number generators. Dr. Bancel gives a high-level description of the project and the primary results, and then dives into the many subtleties involved in interpreting the results.

Random Event Generators

The interaction of consciousness and physical systems is most often discussed in theoretical terms, usually with reference to the epistemological and ontological challenges of quantum theory. Less well known is a growing literature reporting experiments that examine the mindmatter relationship empirically. Here we describe data from a global network of physical random number generators that shows unexpected structure apparently associated with major world events.

Global Mind Change

Global Mind Change startles us into reconsidering the role of consciousness in major areas of human concern: science and education, spirituality and consciousness research, health and healing, psychology and psychotherapy, economics and management. Revolutions are generally thought of as large-scale, bloody upheavals involving whole countries and societies. But there are quieter revolutions that begin in the individual mind and create the kind of change that may be even more significant. By deliberately changing their internal image of reality, people are transforming the world.

"Creating a World that Works for All" with Sharif Abdullah

Sharif Abdullah says: We are in deep trouble. We live in a world that works for only a few. It doesn’t work for those it purports to serve. This world was created by a shift in consciousness, a shift to exclusivity. Through the practice of exclusivity, "I am separate", we have created a soul-starved society. Exclusivity has created societal and personal problems that are fundamental, nightmarish, complex and interlocking: The Mess. The Mess leads to an inner emptiness, a hunger for the Sacred.

"Correlations, Consciousness, and the GCP" with Roger Nelson (extended Q&A)

The Global Consciousness Project (GCP) is a long-term experiment that extends psi research to global dimensions, looking for effects of mass consciousness. We predict that events which produce widely shared emotional reactions will register as unexpected structure in random data sequences. The GCP is associated with the Institute of Noetic Sciences, which has provided its logistical home since 1998.
